Salvadoran migrants robbed, women raped at border

GRANJENO, Texas Border Patrol agents are increasing patrols in a remote South Texas border area where three men wielding machetes and pistols have assaulted [ILLEGAL]migrants.

Authorities say the men detained a group of Salvadorans who crossed the border illegally early today and robbed them. All the woman in the group were fondled and three were raped at gunpoint.

It happened on the north bank of the Rio Grande. U-S Border Patrol agents unaware of the attack arrested the group of 29 immigrants shortly afterward near the town of Granjeno, about 230 miles south of San Antonio.

Border Patrol officials say the incident is similar to another earlier this week and fear other cases may haven't been reported.

The [ILLEGAL]migrants are in the Border Patrol's custody and were being questioned in McAllen by Hidalgo County Sheriff's investigators.

The [ILLEGAL]migrants identified their attackers as being Mexican and said one of them had tattoos.
